Many Christians today find themselves standing in the shallow waters of faith, content to visit the river of God's presence without ever fully surrendering to its current. But God is calling us to something deeper - to move beyond ankle-deep, knee-deep, or even waist-deep faith into complete submersion where His Spirit can truly flow through us.
What Does It Mean to Stand in the River vs. Being Carried by It?
In Ezekiel 47, we see a powerful vision of water flowing from the temple. The prophet describes being led progressively deeper - first ankle deep, then knee deep, then waist deep. At each of these levels, he still maintained control. His feet were firmly planted, and he could resist the current if he chose to.
But then came the moment of decision: "Again he measured a thousand, and it was a river that I could not pass through, for the water had risen. It was deep enough to swim in, a river that could not be passed through."
This is where many of us hesitate. We're comfortable with controlled faith - the kind where we can still plant our feet and maintain our grip on what feels safe and familiar. But there's a profound difference between standing in the river and letting the river carry you.
Why Do We Resist Full Surrender?
The truth is, we all like control. We want to know what's coming, what's going on, and we don't like uncertainty. Partial surrender feels safer because we can still shift our weight, protect ourselves, and keep from really moving with the flow of God's Spirit.
But here's the reality: partial disobedience is complete disobedience. A half truth is a full lie. A little bit of sin damages everything. We can't say "God, I want this part of my life blessed, but don't touch this other area over here."
When we fully submerge ourselves in God's river, we only have two options: we can fight it, or we can trust it. We can fight the water, or we can trust the current to take us where God wants us to go.
What Happens When We Let the River Flow Through Us?
The most remarkable thing about this river in Ezekiel's vision is where it flows. It heads toward the Dead Sea - one of the most lifeless bodies of water on earth. But when this river reaches that dead place, something miraculous happens: "the water will become fresh... everything will live where the river goes."
Not some things. Not selective things. Everything. Where this water goes, there is life.
This river isn't meant just to touch you - it's meant to flow through you. When you submerge yourself completely, it brings life to everything around you: your home, your workplace, your family, your community. As Jesus said, "Whoever believes in me, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water."
The Pattern of Submersion and Resurrection
Romans 6:4 tells us, "We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life."
Notice the word "buried" - that's full submersion. And here's the pattern we see throughout Scripture: submersion precedes resurrection. You can't have resurrection life unless you're willing to die to something first.
Too many times we want the benefits without the work that comes with it. We want the power, the anointing, the revival, without the surrender that precedes all of that. But God is asking for complete surrender of our hearts and lives.
What Does Full Surrender Look Like?
Galatians 2:20 gives us the picture: "I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me." This isn't "Jesus, help me" - this is "Jesus, lead me."
Full surrender means:
- Letting go of unforgiveness
- Releasing control over our circumstances
- Trusting God's timing and methods
- Allowing Him to work in areas we've kept off-limits
- Moving from "God, I need" to "God, lead me"
The Promise of Life in Dead Places
Maybe today you feel like the Dead Sea - you've received sermons, worship, prayer, and truth, but you've never truly stepped into what God is calling you to. You've allowed the river to flow into you, but you've stopped it there instead of letting it flow through you and out to others.
But here's the promise: if you will fully surrender to Him, you'll begin to see life break out in those dead places. Your marriage can have life. Your calling can have life. Your joy can return. The anxiety and stress can be gone. The boldness you once had can come back to life.
Because everywhere this river flows, there is life. And if this is going to be a year of breakthrough in your life, you can't just sit back and wait for God to do something while you guard the shoreline of comfort.
Life Application
This week, identify one area of your life where you've been standing in shallow water instead of fully surrendering to God's will. It might be your finances, a relationship, a calling, or a hurt you've been holding onto. Make the decision to step into the deep water - to fully surrender that area to God without trying to maintain control.
Consider these questions as you take this step:
- What am I afraid will happen if I let go of control in this area?
- How has holding onto control actually limited what God can do in my life?
- What would it look like for God's river to flow through me to bring life to others around me?
- Am I willing to trust God's current even when I can't see where it's leading?
Remember, you'll never experience overflow while guarding the shoreline. God is calling you not just to visit the river, but to let yourself be carried by it into the abundant life He has planned for you.
