Are You Ready to Step Into the River? Moving Beyond Ankle-Deep Faith

Have you ever found yourself standing at the edge of something greater, testing the waters but never fully diving in? Many Christians today find themselves in this exact position - close enough to experience God's presence, but not quite ready to surrender complete control.

What Does It Mean to Guard the Shoreline?

The truth is simple yet challenging: you will never experience overflow while guarding the shoreline. Too many believers love the idea of God's river flowing in their lives, but they resist giving up control. We want the blessings, the anointing, and the power, but we also want to maintain our grip on how things unfold.

This creates a spiritual tension where we're content with where we are, never realizing that God is calling us to something deeper. We settle for what we have because that's all we've asked for, but God has so much more waiting for us if we're willing to step forward.

The Journey from Ankle-Deep to Full Submersion

In Ezekiel 47, we see a powerful vision of a river that flows from God's presence. The prophet is led through this river at different depths, each representing a different level of surrender and faith.

Ankle-Deep Christianity: Safe but Controlled

At ankle-deep, the water is refreshing and manageable. You're technically in the river, but you're still completely in control. This represents many believers who attend church, serve occasionally, and pray when things get difficult, but maintain control over their lives.

Ankle-deep faith wants benefits without surrender. You want God's blessings but aren't willing to surrender your habits, attitudes, or control. You want heaven without dying to self.

Knee-Deep Faith: Feeling Conviction

When the water reaches your knees, it represents surrender, prayer, and humility. You feel conviction about areas that need to change, but you can still brace yourself against the current. Many Christians stop here - they feel God moving but never experience true transformation.

The danger of staying knee-deep is that you'll feel conviction but never experience the breakthrough. You might repent, but nothing actually changes in your life because you're not willing to go deeper.

Waist-Deep Waters: Losing Stability

At waist-deep, you start losing control. The water that was once refreshing is now moving you. This is where God begins dealing with your habits, attitudes, unforgiveness, pride, and relationships. Many Christians become uncomfortable here because the river is no longer just soothing - it's transforming.

Full Submersion: Complete Surrender

Finally, there's water deep enough to swim in - water you cannot pass through on your own. Here, you cannot control the direction you're going. You must learn to trust the current completely. This is where transformation and resurrection life truly begin.

You cannot swim in the water and cling to the shore at the same time. Something has to give.

Why Full Submersion Matters

When you're fully submerged in God's river, everything changes. Ezekiel 47:9 tells us that wherever this river goes, every living creature lives. When you're flowing with God's river, everyone you encounter experiences life because they're encountering the river through you.

This is the gospel in action - as you move with God's current, you bring life to your workplace, your family, your community. People are faced with the same decision you faced: step into the river or stay on the shore.

What Needs to Die for You to Live?

Here's the key truth: you'll never experience resurrection life until you let something die. Your control, your pride, your fear - something must be surrendered completely.

Many of us are more comfortable with drama and chaos because that's all we know. We're afraid that if we give up control, we won't know what to do with peace and blessing. But God is calling us beyond our comfort zones into His transformative power.

The Promise of Double Blessing

God does not double what you're going to protect - He doubles what you're willing to release. If you want double joy, double strength, double fruit, or double prosperity, you need full submersion into who God is.

The depth of your surrender determines the measure of your overflow. When you're willing to go completely under in surrender, God brings you up in power.

Life Application

This week, honestly evaluate where you are in the river. Are you ankle-deep, knee-deep, waist-deep, or fully submerged? God is calling you to stop testing the waters and step into complete surrender.

Choose one area where you've been maintaining control - perhaps your finances, relationships, career, or habits. Make a conscious decision to release that control to God through prayer, action, and ongoing surrender.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What am I protecting that God wants me to release?
  • Where have I been content when God is calling me deeper?
  • What would change in my life if I truly let God have complete control?
  • Am I more afraid of losing control or missing out on what God has for me?

Remember, standing ankle-deep isn't waiting on God - it's choosing to stay in control. The river is already flowing. The question is: will you step in?
